Robert Mahoney

Bob Mahoney (UMass ’70) oversees New England Banking, including the four state banks plus Citizens Business Credit, Leasing and Dealer Finance, Citizens Capital, and Trust and Investment Services. He joined Citizens Bank in 1993 as President of Citizens Bank of Massachusetts after 22 years at Bank of Boston. He is a 1970 graduate of the University of Massachusetts. He received his MBA from Columbia University.

Providence-based Citizens Financial Group Inc.'s vice chairman Robert Mahoney, along with three family members, pledged $2 million toward a new science facility on the flagship Amherst campus of the University of Massachusetts.

The Integrated Science Building is expected to cost $80 million and comprise 140,000 square feet. It is being built for teams of students and researchers in chemistry, biology, animal science, neuroscience and other sciences.

The Mahoneys graduated from UMass Amherst. Robert Mahoney and his wife, both contributors, graduated from the state's land grant university in 1970. Mahoney's brother Richard, who graduated in 1955, is distinguished executive in residence at the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government and Public Policy at Washington University in St. Louis and retired chairman and CEO of the Monsanto Co. Richard and Robert both studied chemistry.

"Like many of our fellow alums, we were the first generation in our family to attend college,'' Robert Mahoney said in a statement." For the Mahoney brothers, UMass was our only hope for a college degree. I know it will continue to be there for young scientists in the years to come.''
