My Offer to Pay it Forward

  December 2008

Pushing the Edge ...

In lieu of holiday cards, this year pay it forward to a customer's or client's charity.

As we enter the holiday season many of us use holiday greeting cards to reconnect with business partners and express thanks for the association. In recent years some businesses have decided instead to donate money to a charitable cause. They inform their business colleagues by email that they have chosen to support a charity in lieu of sending holiday greeting cards.

This is a wonderful idea! In these difficult economic times, our nation's charities continue to count on the generosity of individuals and organizations.

My offer to "pay it forward"

In keeping with the theme of these newsletters, I want to push this charitable giving idea "beyond the edge."  My good friend, Balaji Krishnamurthy of Logistyle (www.logistyle.com) has suggested a novel approach which I offer to you.

You are invited, as a recipient of this mailing, to make a charitable contribution to your favorite cause - subject to the requirements below - and I will match up to $50 of your contribution, limiting this offer to a total of $500 of matching contributions on a first-come, first-served basis.

The charitable organization must be a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization under IRS Section 501(c)(3) and should not be a religious organization. To take advantage of my "pay it forward" offer, send me an email by December 15 with the following information:

  • The name of the charitable organization and its contact info
  • Your name and the amount of your intended contribution
  • A pledge that you will make the indicated contribution by the end of the calendar year
  • Permission for me to publish your name, the amount and the recipient of your contribution in the next month's "Pushing the Edge" newsletter.

This offer is for forward-paying contributions only, not your past contributions.
I will make a matching contribution - limited to the constraints above - to your chosen cause by the end of the year and inform you immediately. In January's "Pushing the Edge" mailing, I will publish the names of the people who responded and made contributions along with the names of the charitable organizations that received my matching contributions.

I hope that this novel approach will cause you to pause and possibly accept my offer.  Maybe you too will adopt this practice this year or next.  Regardless, we will contribute to some worthy causes.
